This past Saturday was the second annual Staple Austin event to promote independent creative media and by all accounts, it was a smashing success. The large turnout of comic fans were greeted by a multitude of different offerings from comic artists, independent publishers, organizations and panel discussions. Personally, as I walked around the exhibitor hall, I came across a number of artists that I was unaware of. Jason Chalker was a blast to talk to and showed a number of fantastic prints of various paintings he has done in recent months. With a style that screams “Anything goesâ€, Dave Degrand had both original paintings and comics for sale at his booth. Travis Nichols offered a plethora of goodies, all featuring his psychotic cutesy characters and off-the-wall sense of humor. Though I wasn’t able to talk to them, I saw Dave Crosland and Jim Mahfood drawing up a storm while talking to fans and I heard that Tony Millionaire was in attendance someplace in the building, though I never spotted him. In short, this year’s event was a blast… can’t wait to see what the next Staple Austin brings. Check out highlights on the Staple Austin website.
