Stress Case

I got an e-mail from my webhost yesterday that says I’ve been using “more than my fair share” of system resources, and that Drawn! has been moved to an “evaluation server” to handle the load while I find ways to reduce stress on the machines running the site. I’ve reduced the amount of entries on the front page by half, and the amount of entries in the RSS feed to the 5 most recent in the hopes that the pages will load quicker and, in the case of the RSS feed, less frequently. I can’t afford to move the site to a dedicated server, and I’d hate to disable the RSS feed just to keep the site alive, so hopefully reducing the amount of visible articles will do the trick.

In the meantime, you can support the site by buying some cool t-shirts from Veer (that little orange box underneath the Google ad to your right). Thanks for making Drawn! so popular that within two months alarms started going off at my webhost!

    The Google ads are in the sidebar. One reight below the authorpiece, and a group of five below the listing of various links. Good luck with the fund raising, this site deserves to stay up.

    Might I ask what kind of bandwidth you’re going through? Maybe with some idea of the numbers someone can step up to help cover hosting.

    Brian, bandwidth does not appear to be the problem — it’s the CPU cycles since the site is dynamic PHP — the pages build themselves on each pageview.

    Just a heads-up that you want to be very careful about asking people to click on the Google ads to support the site. Google is very clear about this in their terms and I personally know of people that have been banned from the program for doing something very similar to this. Here is the info on this at Google’s site… it’s under the “Incentives” heading. Thought you should know.

    There are hosts out there who offer unlimited bandwidth, banking on the fact that 99.99999% of their clients will never get heavy traffic. I use Readyhosting.com, and they claim to have unlimited bandwidth. I’ve never tested this claim, though I have tried my best! ;-)

    It would be worthwhile to call around to various hosts who offer this and make their sales/tech support people verify the claim. That could be a cheap solution.

    I’ve actually been investigating php hosting lately. I don’t know what your fees are but it feels unprofessional for a hosting provider to say that you’re using too many cycles.

    One option I’m considering for site hosting is Yahoo. I find it difficult to believe that they’d fuss over a few CPU cycles.

My host has a warning in the contract about cycles used and resources that are needed for any one website, and a few of the hosts I’ve had in the past had the same restriction, so I don’t think it’s unusual. If you find a host that has less restrictive policies, or if you find another solution, I hope you’ll post it here. I love this blog, and visit fairly often. I’d hate to see you have to scale back on anything. Thanks for making such a cool blog!
