Stuart Immonen

Toronto’s Stuart Immonen is my new favourite comic book artist, working alongside Warren Ellis on Marvel’s very unique and fun — though sadly not top-selling — “Nextwave.” It’s not that he’s new, it’s just that I’m not that wired into things and hadn’t noticed his fabulous work till recently. The gallery on his site doesn’t do the best job at showing the scope of his talent, but it’s probably victim to his crazy busy schedule and hasn’t been updated in a while.

You can subscribe to either his blog, or his weekly comic strip “Never As Bad As You Think” (pictured here, and which links to his Flickr account), or both!

EDIT: Stuart reminded me that he doesn’t produce “Never As Bad As You Think” all by his lonesome: Kathryn Immonen writes the strip!

Love Immonen’s work, and NEVER AS BAD AS YOU THINK shows he’s a mainstream comic book artist with tremendous range, capable of moving between idioms with a rare ease. In that respect, he reminds me somewhat of the great (much missed, lost to teaching) David Mazzuchelli.
