Studiotunes

Ever since Matt added a “Studiotunes” category here, I’ve been aching to write a post using it, but since it’s not that often I come across links of people’s studio listening habits, why not just ask the readers of Drawn!? So… what music is everyone listening to these days while they draw? (Myself, I’ve been listening to the latest Crooked Fingers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Death Cab, Clor, and dammit if I can’t get that Mama Cass song from the the premiere of Lost out of my head…)

  • http://elnegromagnifico.blogspot.com/ Al aka El Negro Magnifico

The last time I really dug into some tunes while drawing, I had the Nuggets II box set on. Non-stop garage-y goodness.
At work (I do newspaper design), I’ve been bouncing between Cage’s new album Hell’s Winter and Mike Doughty’s Haughty Melodic…polar opposites. Last night, I downloaded (legally) Harvey Danger’s new album Little By Little, and I’ve found that pretty cool to work to.

    i’ve been listening to….

    aqualung
    bloc party
    the new death cab
    andrew bird
    sujfan stevens
    kaeiser chiefs

    gorillaz
still can’t stop listening to green day’s ‘american idiot’
    the killers
    kings of convenience
    mates of state
    ok go
    zykos

and of course, mr. snoop doggy dogg. because i like to drop it like it’s hawt.

I actually listen to different kinds of music depending on what I am doing. Music has a certin energy.

    When I do computer work/program, it’s rock:
Rush, Creed, Caroline’s Spine, Natasha’s Ghost, Midnight Oil, Queen, Enda, etc

When I draw or paint. It’s usually meditative like buddhist chants or new age:
Om Mani Padme Hum (Budi Siebert)
    Call of the Mystic
    Ascension to Tibet (Dean Everson)
Buddhist Chants: Harmony of the Soul
    Tea series
    San

I know you asked about music, but…

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of OTR while I work. MP3s of The Shadow, Inner Sanctum, Superman, Green Hornet, Jack Benny, etc, etc. I’ve already collected thousands of the buggers of the web.

I like to listen to a mix of Sam phillips, Norah Jones, Rufus Wainwright, Chet Baker, Sigur Ros, Azure Ray, Ivy, Yves Montand(Rue St. Vincent) plus the soundtrack of Midnight in the garden of good and evil. This seems to work well for autumn creativity.

I need solid Rock/Electronica these days to get myself to work, so it’s mainly :

    The White Stripes
    Led Zeppelin
    Le Peuple de l’Herbe
    Mozesli
and mostly Ghinzu (totally awesome Belgian rock with a touch of electronica)

Although I have to admit listening also to the lovely songs of Albin de la Simone and Jeanne Cherhal…

Since iTunes added folders for playlists I have been listning to all my Radiohead, Eels and Ed Harcourt records nonstop. I just made a playlist for each album and put the playlists in artistspecific folder. Now I have the folders on raddom and the sweet tunes flow out of my mac.
Sadly my speakers droke down some days ago so I have use the buildt in speaker. Like having a radio in a tin can. But it’s better than nothing.

Right now I’m listening to Nick Drake’s bootleg released Tanworth-in-Arden II (it was a pain to find it, but I eventually did).

My most frequently played while drawing, reading, thinking, living, going insane, etc.:

The Beatles | Nick Drake | The Velvet Underground | Bob Dylan | Arik Enstein & Shalom Chanoch (local musicians) | Leonard Cohen | Skip James | Louis Armstrong | The Doors | Meir Arial (local musician) | Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd (with Barrett) | James Yorkston & The Athletes | Nico | The High Windows (local band) | Son House | Blind Willie McTell | David Bowie | FortisSacharoph (local band) | Jackson C. Frank | Bill Fay | Dino Valente | Animal Collective | The Kinks | Joy Division | Rockfour (local band) | Pavement/Stephen Malkmus | Sufjan Stevens | Tom Waits | The Smiths | Rev. Gary Davis | Johnny Cash | Blur | Badly Drawn Boy | Aimee Mann | Super Furry Animals | The Concretes

    Composers:

Mark Mothersbaugh | Koji Kondo (I can’t stop listening to Nintendo tracks) | Beethoven | Mozart | John Fahey (not exactly a composer, but still…) | Peter McConnell | Yoko Kanno | Nobuo Uematsu

My favourite band at the moment is The Fall. I don’t expect that to change any time soon… XD

I just got back from seeing The Arcade Fire in Edmonton. (Actually, I sort of FOLLOWED them there with two friends from school after seeing them in Saskatoon on Sunday; long story). They played a cover of “Age Of Consent” by New Order, which I went absolutely nuts over. (And which they didn’t play in Saskatoon) New Order are probably my second favourite band ever. And it was the best cover ever! XD

As I type this I am listening to the debut album by Wolf Parade, who opened for Arcade Fire. It’s very good.

Several of my other all-time faves include:

    - Wire
    - The Blue Orchids
    - Q And Not U
    - Les Savy Fav
    - Fugazi
    - Mission of Burma
    - Joy Division
    - Billy Childish
    - The Constantines
    - The Shins
    - American Analog Set

its hilarious how us “visual people” seem to NEED sound ! I like to listen to music without lyrics for my illustration jobs cause i dont want to get transported into someone else’s vision, and just keep my own little right brain going; last night i was into Miles Davis, sometimes Bach gets me going, or ill just leave the jazz radio on. i love lauryn hill ,erykah badu and jillscott for fashion illustration, i love red hot chili peppers nirvana white stripes when i paint, notorious big tupac delasoul tribecalled quest digable planets when i do a mural. For sketching im more flexible, ill just leave my ipod on shuffle and let music do its own job while i do mine.

Sometimes when working on the book, I’ll have the need to put on some heroic music. Like the soundtracks to Superman or Batman. But mostely, it’s Dylan, the Stones or the Beatles. You know, the classics.

I live for Steely Dan. I could listen to them 24 hours a day, but I throw in some Miles Davis for good measure.
