“TACK’S CARTOON TIPS have been pepared for the purpose of aiding those desirous of entering the field of Comic art. I have used these “Tips” in my personal instruction classes with marked success”

From a Flickr slideshow / scan of B. “Tack” Knight’s 1923 instructional book on cartooning.

Nice, I'll keep them on mind :) Thanks!!

Wow! I can see a lot bits in this that R. Crumb must have lifted from this over the years

Very cool. There are a few little nuances that never occurred to me.
I'll definitely be mentally referencing this on occasion.

great as a list of platitudes to avoid

Note: The letters A,G,M,N and W may be made two ways….straight or with little loops tying certain parts together… Why, you may ask? Because apparently B. “Tack” Knight likes it that way and so should you.

A nice little piece of nostalgia, but incredibly dated in terms of usefulness.

nice drawing i like it so much

    R. Crumb didn't lift from this probably — an entire generation of cartoonists drew this way. Many refer to this as the “golden age” in fact.

@0s and 30s comics are great — they have a special charm unique to the time. My own persona favorite is Segar's Thimble Theatre starring Popeye. Go out and get The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics to see a wonderful sampling of the era.

I know what you mean, but the title page jolted me into thinking of one of his stories that starts with him at his drawing table in that exact set up (can't exactly recall the strip right now).

This may well save my whole life.

    Seriously, this is great.

Good to see some of that old school racial stereotyping there.

    “Darktown celebrities”?!

Seriously though it's pretty nice, especially the backgrounds

I love the word 'desirous'. Should be used more.
