Taro Gomi: Doodle All Year

Taro Gomi (perhaps best known for Everyone Poops) has released another brilliant colouring/activity book for kids called Doodle All Year with over 265 pages of clever, stimulating doodle exercises for the kid in all of us.

How fun is it, crayon in hand, to open a big fat colouring book full of Gomi’s childlike scribblings encouraging you to let loose and colour outside the lines? The pages invite you to dress crocodiles in new spring outfits, change the colour of autumn cactuses, or fill a sky with hot air balloons. As soon as my niece can hold a crayon, I know what she’s getting for her birthday.

Sorry but… I’m always slightly annoyed at these “trendy” books my aunt Gertrud could have doodled during breakfast.

To me it’s a perfect example of today’s rampant tendency to think something is cool because the media said it was cool. (my own opinion – I respect others’)

Phooey on the rest of you! Don’t dismiss these books without even looking at them in person! Aside from being doodling books, they’re a perfect showcase for Gomi’s work and whimsical imagination.

I love Gomi’s work, and I own these “doodling” books. I love pulling them out when my friends are around, and drunkenly scribble in them with markers and crayons – like we used to, when we were kids (minus the copious amounts of alcohol.)

Gomi’s work is quite beloved in Japan, and I’m happy to see his more of his work finally published here within the last few years. I bought his hardcover book (and beautifully drawn) “My Friends” for a pregnant co-worker. She was almost moved to tears reading it (but that may have been partly due to the hormones.)

I really like Gomi’s work. It’s really immediate and eyecatching. Besides it’s always easier to draw in a sketchbook that’s already been started than it is to begin a new one. Let Taro Gomi start it for you!

Well then, I suppose looking at those few shots on Amazon makes you an authority on Gomi’s prolific body of work of 300+ published books? Right?

I’m not trying to get into an argument here, and I respect your opinion if you simply don’t like the man’s work. But your assertion (and presumption) about him being “trendy” is misguided, as he’s been around for YEARS, and I (personally) look forward to whatever else he publishes in the future.

I said I was an authority? I talked about his whole body of work? I actually like Gomi’s work but I don’t think I’d purchase this particular book.

Also, I am 100% correct in saying his books are trendy AND… I am 100% qualified to give my own opinion. (you need to watch that agressivity, use of caps and wild imagination about things I never wrote.)
