TechVector

So you think you’re pretty confident in Illustrator? The impossibly realistic looking vector illustrations at TechVector may make you rethink your own vector chops.

Very nice… I wouldn’t be too sure they’re “illustrated” tho… looks like 3d CG to me… But still some very nice vectors

CG dude, in saying that you were’nt sure they’re illustrated, you just paid that guy quite a compliment!

Easy there fellas: don’t blow off the CG so fast. Just as the poor workman blames his tools for failure, the poor critic credits the tools for success.

You think it’s so easy? You do it.

I found this work to be quite impressive.

Gilbert’s work is awesome. His perspective looks perfect. His gradients are real solid. If he was using Adobe Illustrator to draw these objects he’d be one of the best illustrators to use the program.

I’ve poked around his site and have seen no mention of CG software. If he is porting the vectors in I’d feel a little cheated.

    what’s the point ???
    masturbation ?
I wouldn’t spend so much time to produce such a poor image (in term of composition)
and no need to use illustrator to get this,
would have been 10 time more adequate to use 3d cg.

Yes, it is technically very, very good, but I agree with what petica says. Why go through the time and effort in making vectors when a 3d program will do it faster, what if it needs to be rotated and viewed at other angles?

Regardless, this still beats a lot of the 3d modeling most people can do.

    Gradient work is great.
Would be more impressed if so much of the stuff wasn’t traced.

his stuff looks pretty freakin’ awesome to me. were the gradients done w/ the gradient mesh or gradient tool? i saw a guy’s work who did realistic fruit, but he used the gradient mesh, which isn’t really working w/ vectors in a strict sense (i started w/ AI at v. 1.1, and i made my gradients the old-fashioned way: w/ 2 shapes or paths blended from one to the other). marc

Nice work! I know these are definitely 100% Illustrator. So all you guys can stop hatin’ just because you don’t have the skills to pull it off. Kudos to TechVector.

TechVector dude, nice work. It really does look like a photograph. You have mastered your craft. It reminds me of a job I did for Cadillac Motor. They spent millions perfecting the finish on their Teakwood dash and console. Problem was the finish was so perfect it looked like plastic. I was called in to retouch the photos to make it look like wood again.

If it looks like a photo and walks like a photo, people will think it’s a photo. Just say, hey it’s not really a photo or something like that.

I thought it was real. I tried to pick it up and tinked my finger on the monitor glass. You fooled me. Kudo’s.

Its amazing to see such complex figures made by Techvicor. This is really innovation at its best.

I never liked usuing Illustrator but after seeing TechVector’s work, I’m motivated/inspired to reconcile and give it another try for my work! Amazing work! And no Photoshop?! Now I sound like I’m gushing. I also like the photos of his studio.

Wow… what did I start here? I know now why I rarely post…

Props indeed to Techvector, but you can’t blame people for their suspicions as their is nothing on the site to indicate they’re drawn and not traced or modeled… infact the animation section does show you can use 3d software, yet their is no indication to any drawing ability… even the stencil style images are obviously from some kind of photographic reference…

Having said that theres nothing wrong with that at all… I was just correcting an observation… If this view pains you so then show some WIPs

BTW… Check the Fish in the Vector/Stylised/BottomRight… CG if I ever saw it

(I also don’t belive for a min that the Techvector on this post is the real one either) sorry folks but all the trolls on the web made me this way!

    Props for the imagery!

these are nice looking images, and this is an interesting debate.

if it is all done in illustrator, i’d like to know how to create such complex gradients. in my experience, you only have a choice of radial or linear, yet the golf club has some pretty complex gradients…

Reggie Gilbert was featured in the book “Adobe Illustrator CS2 Wow!” – the picture of the Ashland firestation. The kid has enormous chops as a technical illustrator and that is why companies use him to illustrate their products. Vector illustration is obviously scalable for print jobs (unlike 3D images) and allows for massive amounts of precise detail in technical illustration contexts (again better than lit and rendered 3D, or photography for that matter). Artistic merit isn’t necessarily relevant in this context, and Reggie clearly has lots of other outlets for creativity. As for using 3D modelling software, I think we can discount him using that by looking at the web/animation section of his website – he clearly used 3d software there for the lego man and motorbike, and the results are comparatively amaturish. He is much better in Adobe Illustrator than in 3D rendering software.

Why don’t youse guys try and do it in Painter vectors and then do a lil’ number to dem in KPT Kai’s power tools like Shapeshifter for a bit. Stop talking BS Petica! You’ve got a lot to learn about art if all you know is accuracy. Start feeling about something first, then talk! This is a fine piece of work.

Those of you who have been arguing if TechVector uses 3D software to do his illustrations have no idea of the results you get when exporting 3D Artwork. Obiously he uses Photographic reference as well as Pre-rendered images and Re-traces them using only Illustrator Tools.

    “…what’s the point ???
    masturbation ?…”

His images aren´t pointless! His images can be scaled and printed in any size you can imagine, his archives are kept small and you can even export it to Flash and you never get resolution problems. This is the closest you get to creating a “Perfect Technical Illustration”. His goal its NOT to make a beautiful Composition (TechVector… get it?).

Having worked with Reg (Tech Vector), and learned from him and traded secrets and tips, I can verify that everything is done in Illustrator, and by him, and none of it is pointless…as he has produced wok for various companies and people for ca$h. In this world, getting paid to do what you enjoy is never pointless…but don’t be jealous guys, if you all put in as much time as Reg has, you may become just as good….Maybe.
