The Animation Show

animation show

To commemorate The Animation Show opening up in Atlanta today, I decided to post about this most excellent travelling show of animated wonder, brought to you by Mike Judge (Beavis & Butthead, Office Space) and Don Hertzfeldt (Billy’s Balloon, Rejected). This is the second year for the Show, featuring Bill Plympton’s Oscar-nominated GUARD DOG, the wild and frenetic WARD 13, and Don’s newest, THE MEANING OF LIFE, among others. They score double-points with me for the über-cool poster (at left), illustrated by the fantastic Tim Biskup. Care to see a larger version of the poster? Why, just click HERE. Care to see if the Show is coming to your town? Click HERE.

I’m excited because they’re making a stop in Austin. I might have to make like a Star Wars fan and put everything on hold for a week or two so that I can camp outside the box office, waiting for tickets to go on sale.

I saw the show last year and it was without a doubt one of the higlights of my life. I sat for a whole hour and a half completely mesmerized by what was going on.

Highlights from last year include the 1950′s Disney Cartoon that looks like the animators were experimenting with early versions of LSD. The Tim Burton feature, only because it’s the same style as The Nightmare Before Christmas. And I forget the title, but there was a stop motion short film about rocks that was incredible.

They aren’t coming to Ottawa this year (tear), so I won’t have a chance to see the new show. So for everyone that has the oppurtunity this year, go for me, because you will regret it otherwise.

Plus, hertzfeldt is a work-aholic. Check out http://www.bitterfilms.com and look at his production schedule, this guy goes through quite a bit to get his films created. Show some love.

Since Spike and Mike’s Twisted Animation Festival was pretty dissapointing last year (too much hype over it), I decided not to go this year. This though, looks so much more of what I’d like to see in animation that it doesn’t even compare to Spike and Mike’s. I’m definetly getting Volume 1 on DVD and can only hope my city will eventually be added to the list.

    Ovi,

I kind of liked Spike and Mikes this year, although I was sort of guaranteed to like it as it was the first year I’ve ever gone. I still don’t get how Happy Tree Friends are such a big hit, I like them OK, but I guess it may just go to show that volume of output breeds excitement.

Anyhow, I was actually posting because was very excited to see this post today as I’ll be heading out to the show tonight here in Chicago!

(and no, S&M didn’t come to Chi-town this year, it was quite the lovely latenight drive back from Milwaukee last friday. ugh.)

I saw this last year, and it was truly awesome. So far it doesn’t say anything about coming to Madison, WI, but it didn’t last year either, so I can still hope.

As for that badass poster, I just met Tim Biskup last night– he was doing a talk here in Madison. He is such a super-nice, personable guy, and while he deserves to have a ginormous ego, it just isn’t there. If anyone of you people out there ever has a chance to meet and/or hang out with him, cancel all other appointments and go. No really, just go.

I missed the Animation Show last year when it came to Toronto, so I vowed to not let that happen again, but unfortunately there is now Toronto stop this year (yet). I’ll be sure to make it to the Waterloo showing instead.

But I have seen a few of the shorts from this year’s program. When the Day Breaks is an NFB short from a few years ago that was nominated for the Oscar.

Bunnies I’ve seen online here, and I just love it.

Ward 13 I saw at ResFest this year, and although the stop-motion is slightly crude, it contains possibly one of the greatest animated action sequences I’ve ever seen.

While I love Don Hertzfeldt’s work and overall enjoyed last year’s show, I found it hit or miss. I went this year in Berkeley and really loved it – almost every piece. My favorites were probably Ward 13, which felt almost like a complete, satisfying movie on its own, and Hello, which was a clever concept and was utterly sweet and lovable. I was a bit sad, though, that Don only had one piece in the show, compare to last year’s three. He did a Q&A after the show, though, and mentioned that the character Bill from his comic Temporary Anethetics may be making his way into a Bitter Film short – I’m really looking forward to seeing the strip get new life!
