The Comics in Canada: An Illustrated History by the CBC

God bless the CBC. They’ve unearthed 16 gems from their archives celebrating the history of Canadian cartooning. Included in this collection, The Comics in Candada: An Illustrated History, are video and audio profiles/interviews of Canadian cartoonists such as Spawn‘s Todd McFarlane, Cerebus‘s Dave Sim, Seth, Ben Wicks, George Feyer, Chester Brown, Doug Wright, and a time-travelling video interview with For Better or For Worse‘s Lynn Johnston from 1980, just one year after the launch of her strip. A goldmine!

Fantastic! There are times I want to give the cbc a big hug. This is one of those times. The Lynn Jonhston vid was great! She’s always been a favorite. I guess perhaps I have that prairie connection with her.

There is book on the history of the Canadian comic book coming out in the fall called in Invaders From The North. It’s written by the guy who created the ‘Beyond the Funnies’ and ‘Guardians of the North’ websites that the cbc links to.

Hi all – There are four new radio clips up on the CBC Archives comic topic; a Hal Foster one, another early Lynn Johnston one, the 1st part of a radio doc about “comics as art” (from 1980!), and a really nice (and long – 30 minutes) interview of Seth.
Look under the “Additional Clips” section.
    Cheers – B.

[...] Drawn! recently had a post about the history of Canadian cartoonists in, well, Canada. One of the featured cartoonists is Lynn Johnston and her For Better Or For Worse comic.  The video interview runs about 14 minutes and is quite interesting – even if you know a lot about Lynn.  The interview was done in 1980 – about a year after FBOFW was syndicated.
