The culpable designer

Artist and designer Eric Karjaluoto asks on his blog, have you engaged in harmful design?

In this short essay he considers “bad” design, asks why a designer might help cigarettes seems safer, and takes a look at offenders like Nike, Victoria’s Secret, and even the Nazis.

As creative individuals, how often do you stand up for what’s right, and how often do you toe the line?

“Link” is wrong. Design is always exciting, doesn’t matter the subject. The question is: shall we join the ones who work for a sellfish world, a world ruled by strength? Or would we do better if we helped to build a world where all beings are respected?

Link also seems to be confusing the political correctness of design itself with the ethics of the designer, which is what this article is really about.

Fellows, this is an interesting issue. I believe it´s just like the “eating meat” subject. After you know how it´s produced, you can´t just act like the things are ok. I believe there are 2 aproaches: you can ignore these king of client and work to the “correct ones”. or you can suggest to them to put some efforts on projects that´ll improve the society and even the planet.
