The Danish Poet

UPDATE: I’m giving this post a bump because I just noticed you can watch The Danish Poet in its entirety online at the NFB site. (English; 15 min) I think it’s only available for a limited time so enjoy!

A belated congratulations to Torill Kove, winner of the Oscar for Best Animated Short! This is the 12th Academy Award for the National Film Board of Canada.

The Danish Poet web site has some fun films and interviews about the process of animating the film. It’s fairly straight-forward, (“It was drawn in pencil on paper, then scanned and coloured digitally.”), but I think you’ll agree that the simplicity of the project was a big ingredient in its charm.

The Danish Poet will air on CBC, March 4th.

Disclosure: I actually work at the NFB, in the same building as Kove, but I work in the basement (give me back my stapler!). Maybe when the dust settles, I’ll head into the labyrinthine animation department and try to congratulate her in person.

“Video content not available in the US” This makes me so sad. The interview with Kove on Danish Poet was wonderful tho. A little taste of what I’m missing.

Congratulations to Torill! And the NFB!(Still recognized worldwide)

*On a side note, Sheridan (canada) animation alumni Mike Thurmier’s film was also nominated for animated short (Blue Sky’s – No Time for Nuts)

Mike was one year ahead of me at Sheridan, and it just feels good to hear a recognizable name being nominated for such an award.

    Congrats MiKE!

I read that the CBC is airing it as part of “Canadian Reflections” at … and get this … Sunday at midnight. So yeah, BIG woo-hoo to the CBC for making it so accessable. In the meantime, I think I’ll be watching it from this link. Like many, unfortunately I’ll be busy on Sunday at midnight.
