The Guerilla Art Kit

guerilla.jpgIf I had to name one artist whom I consider to be the most inspirational when it comes to cutting the crap and embracing pure creativity I’d probably pick Keri Smith. Her latest book, The Guerilla Art Kit, takes this passion to the streets.

In the book, Keri invites you to get in touch with your guerilla artist and teaches you how and–perhaps more importantly–why you can and should create public art.

In an urban environment it becomes necessary to form a direct connection with the landscape, with aspects of the natural world, or with a greater community. Creating street art is one way to foster that connection… These little gestures encourage me to not take our world so seriously, to contemplate for a moment something outside the predictable. They reawaken a sense of connection to the environment…

The book is filled with recipes and guides for creating homemade stencils, stickers, and other ways to beautify, alter, and excite your own urban landscape and those who inhabit it. Seed bombs, moss graffiti, and public chalkboards are just a few of the fun projects. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to stick googly eyes everywhere…

‘Fraid the book link’s not working.

For googly-eyes mayhem, the infamous anonymous Achewood guest strip is a good starting-point for inspiration. >:D

Inspired by Keri’s book, my wife took the kids (with some friends) to downtown Portland about a week ago. You can check out their adventure here.

OMG I just ordered this book after seeing it at a friend’s house. I love the googly eyes too! Also putting a gift or note into a small bottle, and putting it into a public place, with a note on the outside, “a gift for you.”

I’ve been picking up this book at the bookstore for a couple of weeks now and thumbing through it. Very inspiring! I think I’ll have to pry out the wallet and buy it.

For quite some time now my daughter and I have been writing and drawing love notes and tucking them into the picture books we read at the bookstore. She adores this activity.
