The Hobbit by Tove Jansson

Being a big fan of Tove Jansson‘s Moomin books, I had no idea she had illustrated a version of The Hobbit as well as two books by Lewis Carroll, until I recently discovered this site. There isn’t much information and the scans are a bit small, still it’s amazing to see such rarely seen work (at least to me) by one of the world’s greatest children’s book illustrators.

To make it even harder to spot is the old translation of the title which, if translated back to english, is “The Dragon Mountain”.

Wonderful – the line drawings in particular are really expressive.

Hi! If you like Tove Jansson's illustrations I have to recommend two other books as well. These were my favorites when I was a child. I'm from Finland so my opinion of Tove is not neutral but I sincerely think she was a rare genius.
The book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My is not only beautifully illustrated but the structure of the book is also very interesting. There's holes cut to the pages and you can see little bit about what's going to happen next. (The original title of the book can be translated to: “What happened next?”)

Her books, 'A summer book' and 'A winter book' are amazing also. Touching and understated shorts. There is an especially poignant chapter in A winter book called 'correspondance' ..It really shows how much she touched people and how kind a heart she had.
