The Multi-Talent

Behold Greg Clarke, artist extraordinaire. I have seen his illustrations here and there (most recently on New Yorker covers, I believe) but did not know who this astounding gentleman was. Shame on me for my ignorance. Engaging, witty, warm and sometimes maudlin illustrations of quirky people and erudite animals. Delightful and intelligent sequental art, whimsical and lush illustrated books. Once at his web site, be prepared to be there for a while; best to get a cup of tea (or perhaps a more hearty libation) for the wondrous adventure which lies ahead.

Patricia, you’re awesome. This is a great post. Like you, I knew the art, but not the man behind them. Thanks for unveiling the mystery.

Yes, he is without a doubt, a great find. I believe I have redeemed myself, and thus may now dust off the Lint that did cling to my soul for past post regressions.

I met Greg Clarke at a Gary Baseman lecture (Clarke and Baseman both worked at UCLA ten years before me doing the same sort of stuff, and a mutual friend was my introduction), and he told a grat story about the two of them going to see Steve Heller at The New York Times about a job. Heller turned down Baseman flat (this is quite a few years back now), and he promptly tossed his portfolio into a trashcan outside the building. Clarke rescued the work for Baseman, and they both went on to great success. Nowadays I see a lot of Clarke in our Parenting magazines, and I try to impress my wife by saying “I know him.”

Beautiful work. I wonder if he did the PBS kids logo. I found the navigation quite intuitive: main sections at the top, logically arranged, clicking on an image revealed a detail view.
