With a simple ballpoint pen, Larry Roibal doodles quick, yet consummate portraits of faces from current events — all on the pages of the newspaper itself.
Who is that? Barack Obama’s cousin? His slightly heavier brother? His larger-mouthed, thicker-necked, rounder-faced impersonator? Hmm?

I didn’t ask to be mentioned on this blog, but I appreciate the kind words by the gracious Lief and Johnny. As the aforementioned doddle was taken out of context, I would at least like to defend myself. This is not meant to be art. not that I would presume to succeed at making art if I tried, but I might start by drawing on pristine paper or canvas, spend more than two minutes on it, and use an eraser when the drawing goes astray. This is just my morning exercise. done in two minutes with a ball point pen on news papers. no erasing, or tracing and no altering in photoshop. By my and most peoples definition, this is my trash (I think on that we are in agreement) Sometimes I succeed, but more often than not, I come up short, I usually can tell in hindsight where the drawing goes astray, but I thank you for pointing to my obvious short comings for me. Stay tuned, as I am a work in progress I will endeavor to draw better.
Best regards,
Larry

I really like these doodles, they’re very charming!
You shouldn’t have to defend your work, Larry, let that woman think what she wants ;)

Your sketch is an honest and immediate artistic response! Kudos for your admirable use of unconventional medium!

I think it’s good stuff, considering it’s an unforgiving medium and Larry didn’t intend to slap a hackneyed caption on it and sell it to a pretentious magazine.
