The Pearce Sisters

pearce.jpg

Aardman director Luis Cook recently completed a grisy tale entitled The Pearce Sisters. Having already won The Special Jury Award at Annecy and ‘Grand Prix’ at Platform International Animation Festival, the short is currently aiming its award sights towards the Oscars. Unfortunately this means that Aardman can’t put the whole short online, but they’re graciously sharing a few clips — the look of the film is just stunning, and has a unique visual style and technique that makes me crave the film in its entirety.

    Wow.
    Wow wow wow wow wow.
    That looks so amazing.
Obviously computer animation, but done like I’ve never seen before.

I know- I completely agree. It’s just gorgeous.

I saw the first of those clips a while ago, and the accompanying article said that they’d animated everything in 3d, printed all the frames, drawn over them by hand, and then scanned the results. Nice to get such a clear refutation of the idea that computer animation is necessarily plastic-looking.

Muy buena la tecnica de este video, pero que fome que no se pueda ver por completo el corto animado, lastima ya que se veia prometedor.

I had planned on mentioning this film when doing my wrap-up on PLATFORM but Aardman didn’t have anything on the film up just yet. It was definitely one of the best at PLATFORM. Luis Cook, who directed The Pearce Sisters, also did the design and overall look of the film. He also did the design of Aardman’s award-winning website and the opening logo for each of their films. He’s an insanely talented guy.

It’s based on a short story by Mick Jackson and it’s quite horrific — in a good way, of course.
