The Sultan’s Elephant

giantgirl

Oh, internet linkage! So, I saw this link to this YouTube video of a giant marionnette via ZeFrank‘s site. She’s being operated by dozens of puppeteers, putting on her shoes, walking around, and.. uh.. taking a shower courtesy of the water-filled trunk of another marionnette: an elephant three-storeys high.

It is at once creepy and mesmerizing. And even if you choose to find it ONLY creepy, you just can’t deny the craft behind it or how amazing this would have been to see live (in London just this past May; the show will be in Calais 28 Sept – 1 Oct, and then in Le Havre 26 – 29 Oct). It was a performance of The Sultan’s Elephant, by ‘Royal de Luxe.’ I found the following write-up on this About.com page (where you’ll also find great photos of the event):

“From Thursday 4 May to Sunday 7 May 2006, The Sultan’s Elephant appeared on the streets of central London. Created by the French company ‘Royal de Luxe’ the wooden elephant weighed 42 tons and was the height of a three-storey house! Royal de Luxe are an extraordinary European street theatre company, renowned on three continents but hardly known in Britain. This was the first time a ‘Royal de Luxe’ show had appeared in London.

The story of ‘The Sultan’s Elephant is loosely based on a tale by Jules Verne. The gist of the story is that there once lived a Sultan who was tormented in his dreams by visions of a girl who he believed was traveling through time. He couldn’t sleep so he built a time-traveling elephant and set off in search of the girl, who, in the course of his nightmares, had been transformed into a marionette 5 meters high.”

You can head to this page on the Sultan’s Elephant’s site to download four PDF booklets that tell the story, complete with illustrations. Which is what I’ll be reading in bed tonight.

Mesmerizing it is, creepy…yeah that too,
    however it does strangely
    demonstrate the human condition.
    And the accompanying music
    ensures that.

    Final words,
weird, yet the amount of work involved
    to make this puppet walk,
    the designing of it, underneath
    it all, it’s pure mechanics.

I was there and it was mesmerising- I do feel that it could have been enhanced by circe de soleil style acrobats on the elephant instead of a bunch of bored-looking people standing around in costumes.

The wife and I saw these videos recently and were blown away. The effort that must have gone into animating these marionettes is staggering, and the effect so very cool.

The song is called Decollage and there used to be a link to it here: http://muzakforcybernetics.blogspot.com/2006/06/les-balayeurs-du-desert-decollage.html , but alas no more. The fact that these guys went through all this effort just to drive a steampunk-style robot elephant through London I think makes it one of the most beautiful moments in recent history.

I’m also pretty sure the song uses vocals by Blossom Dearie, a Jazz fave of mine, though I don’t recognize the song. It definitely sounds re-mixed-ish. It suits the visuals very beautifully.

[...] A while ago, my friend Hessel posted this excellent photo to Flickr. I’ve noticed this insanely cool performance around the interweb earlier. Now, just as back then I really wish that giant elephant and the accompanying girl will frequent one of my country’s small cities even though that doesn’t seem likely. Please Sultan’s Elephant, come to the Netherlands, I’ll give you some peanuts when you do! [...]

[...] Wow!!!…Watch this video and be astonished, mesmorized, and creeped out all at the same time. I thought it was CG then realized it was freakin real!! What an awesome experience this must of been watching these master puppeteers work their magic in this festival! I wished I was in London when this event (The Sultans Elephant by Royal de Luxe) happened, but it’s not too late as the show will continue on to Calais (September 28–October 1) and in Le Havre (October 26 – 29,2006) I’ll admit, my first craving for puppeteers was while watching Being John Malkovich and now this amazing creation! I’m sure everyone felt like a kid again in some mysterious way. I want one! More pics on Flickr here. via Drawn.ca [...]

I met François de la rozière, the man who made the plans for most of the Royal deluxe machines, he came in my fine art school last year to show us some of his works, it was amazing, this man did so much things.. He wants to create something like an entertainment park in the city of Nantes with an enormous three where people will be able to climb on, with stairs, a lot of vegetations and an educative functions, there will also be an bus-like elephant people could go into and look at the engineering, the méchanisms.. But he doesn’t want it to be a business thing, he wants it to be affordable, quite free. For me it wasn’t so great cause the aim is just to tell beautiful stories with incredibles machines wereas I wanted to met a real artist that defend a real reflexion about life in his work. And the giant of royal deluxe has got a scary face expression! But It was cool, it doesn’t need too much to be told, the machines are really impressive and it’s totally free (this is a politic of the street art company (communists! lol)) which is pretty cool. Perhaps you’ll find some françois De la rozière sketches on the net, didn’t try but he showed us somes.. A real engineer work, this guy works a lot!
