The Urban Archetype

Kudos and congrats to Kagan McLeod for providing such lovely illustrations in the caustic and clever book Archetypes: Social Animals in Our Midst, written by Mireille Silcoff.

This brilliant idea, “which illuminates and eviscerates the denizens of the contemporary urban world”, was originally printed as a series in The National Post and can now thankfully be enjoyed in bookform at one’s leisure.

Silcoff’s view of these very recognizable archetypes is dead-on, but it’s Kagan’s luscious illustrations which really bring the book to life. His supple lines and delicate use of watercolours (printed in sepia tone for the book) make me weep with joy and deep-seated jealousy.

Get the book and pray that you don’t find yourself in these descriptions. I’m still laughing and crying over the description of The Literary Blogger.

This appears to be strikingly similar to another smartly illustrated, sharp-tongued classification of the human species called Field Guide to the Urban Hipster (published in 2003). Is there a name for this genre?
