There Was an Old Man with a Beard…

I’m a big fan of Edward Lear, so I was excited to learn from Drawn!-reader Joan that the work of Edward Lear, which includes illustrated books of his limericks, rhymes and other nonsense literature, is available from Project Gutenberg. The books that come complete with their illustrations are available in a zipped file.

Edward Lear was also an inspiration to another famous Edward, the inimitable Edward Gorey. After reading a biography on Gorey I picked up the following book,

Edward Lear: The Complete Verse and Other Nonsense
by Edward Lear, Vivien Noakes (Editor).

The book includes all of Lear’s nonsense verse and accompanying illustrations, as well as various stories and letters. It’s a real joy to read and free up your mind into non-linear thinking.

More information on Mr. Lear can be found on this website:

Edward Gorey is of course an inexhaustible source of surprise and bizarreness. The imprescindible anthology volumes Amphigorey and Amphigorey Too are easy to get; they are a perfect entry to his enigmatic and fascinating universe.
