Tin Can Forest

tincanforest

Man, three hours later, and the sound of drilling through concrete in the suite upstairs does NOT get any more pleasant! Thankfully, Toronto’s Marek Colek & Pat Shewchuk of Tin Can Forest studios (be warned: site has mucho Flash) have a lot of stunning work up on their site to distract me from the noise. What intrigues me most is a project still in development called Domovoi (pictured above). I can’t recall ever seeing anything animated in this particular style, so I look forward to seeing what they do.

Their film “Montrose Avenue” (sorry: all-Flash site; no direct link… just click “animation” and select that title from the sidebar to view a clip from it) has been selected for the Canadian Showcase Screening at this year’s Ottawa International Animation Festival, and for screening in the seventh annual Planet in Focus International Environmental Film & Video Festival in Toronto (Nov 1 to 5). Congrats guys!

    hi Geraldine

It’s not that I “have anything against” Flash sites, but my own personal experience leads me to prefer HTML sites over Flash sites. And if you’re a regular here at Drawn!, you’ll notice that most people feel the same way.

At best, a Flash site makes it difficult to direct readers to specific pages (as mentioned above, I could not provide a direct link to the animated short I was posting about). At worst (at least for sites that are poorly designed, or that use Flash too heavily) it can be frustrating for viewers to navigate the site effecitvely. Or if you subscribe to sites’ RSS feeds to keep abreast of their updates, Flash sites get left in the dust.

Of course this is not always the case. When used minimally, some Flash enhancements can make a website MORE effective and navigable than without it, perhaps by delivering content that would otherwise take much longer to download.

That said, I still love the work found at Tin Can Forest, Flash or not!

I count myself in the “most people feel the same way” column. Flash is for ads and games, not entire content-rich sites. It’s also particularly hard to watch over the course of a half hour “animated” tv show.

Luckily the site is one of those vanishingly rare ones that has URLs embedded in the page source comments!
Here’s the Montrose Avenue clip: http://www.tincanforest.com/montrose.html

On the subject of Flash: I would love to see this drawing style done in full cel animation. I’m really missing cel animation in general, and I had the hope, in seeing the above image, that that’s what would be on the site, but alas, more Flash animation!

I should reiterate that it’s Flash-based WEBSITES that I was yapping about, not Flash ANIMATION.

I love good ol’ hardcore cel animation as much as the next guy, but I enjoy good Flash animation just as much. There is some wonderful Flash animation out there. As with anything, it’s the content, not the method used to deliver it, that always wins out in the end. There’s PLENTY of cel animation that sucks balls. Cel animation in and of itself is not the answer to good animation.

That said, the reason I enjoy Marek & Pat’s work so much is because, Flash or not, they’re wonderful artists and, clearly, knowledgeable aniamation artists. I have no way of knowing if Flash if they’re preferred tool for animating, or if it’s just what they can afford and they’re making the best use of it. My money is on the latter.

    Hey guys and gals,

First off, thanks for posting us in Drawn! . We love Drawn! And thanks for the compliments and interest in our work.

About the site ,I built some parts of it in flash because I like the seamless way a Flash website presents itself. When I give the site an overhaul, I’ll be doing an HTML version and a Flash version, keeping in mind the comments made here regarding Flash sites.

    Cool!
I shouldn’t've come down so hard on flash animation. The way it is handled by tin can forest is masterfully beautiful.
I guess that’s the problem: too few take the time to master it. But, yeah, that’s the problem with cel animation too.
