Ton ‘O’ Fun

tonpup Ton Smits is one of my favourite New Yorker cartoonists, and one who’s often overlooked, despite the fact that he has his own museum back home in Eindhoven, in the Netherlands. If ‘less is more’, than Ton is way, way more, folks. Paul Giambarba has a really terriffic tribute to Ton Smits over here featuring some great strips, and I’ve added a couple here for your enjoyment… click to supersize ‘em…tonstrip1tonstrip2tonstrip3

I love simple line cartoons. New Yorker cartoonist are out of this world. Great little trove in this site. Simpler times.

I’ve been a Ton fan for years (he’s all over the exellent 1955 “Cartoon Treasury”, with many of his dutch spots). Definitely worth a stop next time I’m in Eindhoven.

Many thanks for the plug. I’ve gotten more hits than ever on my otherwise almost moribund blog. I hope someone who has been to the museum will post a comment.

    Great blog!
The museum of courese is really nice especailly remodelled from Ton’s house and studio.
When I saw the small room where Ton was working there. I am touched because I almost could get the atmosphere of drawing cartoon. (maybe I am also doing illustration work)
Talking with his wife living inside makes me feel this museum is really close and friendly to neighborhood.

I am living in Eindhoven now and doing a design project for the park where Ton Smit’s museum is suited.
In this museum the exhibiting style is more static, so we want to give Ton Smit’s cartoon and simple lines a new life by designing some interactive thing. It could be a souvenir, a encouraging book of Ton’s optimistic look, a “how to do cartoon” brochure or anything else.
Now we are in brainstorming stage. Welcome any imaginary, unrealist, even surrealist opinions and ideas!
