Tyger, tyger, burning bright

In Tyger, an animated short by Guilherme Marcondes, a giant jungle cat roams the city and transforms the urban jungle into a actual one, illuminating everything in sight with magic and wonder. Tyger combines puppetry, photography, and animation into the most original animated short I’ve seen in a long time. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch it again. (Thanks, Kev!)

Amazing – rich and vibrant yet dark at the same time, and they blended everything together so nicely. I do have to ask, though, did the puppeteers being visable bug anyone else? Like it wasn’t an artistic choice, like it was just too difficult to remove them . . .

@ Rockiltree: seeing the level of excellence all the other compositing had, i doubt it would’ve been too difficult to erase the puppeteers. i think it was a artistic choice. at least that’s how i understood it and it worked for me.

    Wow.
I thought the puppeteers were a fantastic addition. It gave the piece a theatrical quality, and made everything seem more mysterious.
What a great combination of techniques

I loved the huge shadowy figures! they made it all extra weird and spooky.
In the beginning I wondered what those black shapes were, then I wanted to see how they do it, how they move. The shot where they rise over the hill…brilliant.
Technique does not seem a problem for them :D
Also props to the music. It suits the movements and colors perfectly.

  • Pete..

I wish the human figures holding the puppet weren’t there.. Too noticable, distracting from the actual puppet moving…. always thought a puppeteer was supposed to be invisible…

    But overall very nice..

Seeing the puppeteer is actually very common in actual live puppet shows, and they do dress all in black, just like in the movie. I think that’s what made this one so strange and mysterious, we are too used to hiding things that when something is revealed we find it strange.
