Vaughn Bode

vaughn bodeSome old school for ya. Vaughn Bode was a prolific underground comic artist who cranked out some very intriguing work in the 60′s and early 70′s. He even was a recipient of a Hugo Award in 1969. Even though he died fairly early on in his career (in 1975) his legacy continued on, interestingly enough, through the early graffiti writers of the 70′s, no doubt influenced by the curvy linework and bold colors that his characters possessed. To see just how influential he was within the graff world, check out this gallery. Vaughn’s legacy also continues through his son, Mark, who ended up becoming just as prolific as dear ol’ dad. More about Vaughn here.

Bode has a great strip about artists, a venerable old cave painter on a tall ladder waxing poetic about the value of his art on what is the eve of his death, as he expects to die before morning. In the last panel, another frog who’s been hanging around listening to the whole shmear says “Tomorrow morning I’m gonna come back and erase alla this stuff.”

I always thought that summed up the artists’ existence pretty well.

And it’s that thought that is very similar to how a graffiti writer’s work is treated as well. We paint on a wall one night and by morning it’s painted over by another. So it goes…. Thanks for sharing that, Jon.
