Videos for Total Chickens

rafter.jpgCalling all film makers, animators, and everyone inbetween! Indie music label Asthmatic Kitty is calling for anyone and everyone to participate in a new contest to help celebrate the release of Rafter Robert’s (a.k.a. Rafter) new album Music for Total Chickens. From the AK website:

Contestants will be offered four mp3s to choose from off of Rafter’s upcoming release, Music for Total Chickens. These mp3s will be posted on various blogs and the Asthmatic Kitty website, contestants will choose one of these mp3s to make a video. Contestants will create and upload their videos to the Rafter Contest Group on YouTube. They will have two months to create and post the video. The contest will run to January 23 and the winners will be announced on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2007. No submissions will be taken after January 23, 2007. Two $500 cash prizes will be given.

Judging the videos will be a yet-to-be-announced panel of “celebrity” judges who, I am told, are fantastic. Download the songs below and visit the Asthmatic Kitty website for more details.

I’m sorry to be a killjoy, but I’ve always been wary of contests like this. Back in school there were a lot of illustration “contests”–essentially you and scores of other illustrators vying for a job, and the winner gets published! At least this contest pays a small prize to two winners, but 500 bucks is going to work out to roughly minimum wage + expenses, at best. Meanwhile, the album and label get buckets of free publicity.

ah! but that’s just the thing -= this is all about the art and the sharing! yes – we want publicity too, but we’re not trying to push product so much as share art. actually, i guess that amounts to just about the same thing… so maybe you’re right? but also i think the music is not any sort of mass marketed brain balm – it’s kinda different, weird, special, and full of kindness and love. so as an opportunity for collaboration, gung ho! and as an opportunity to get your work in front of our fantastic celebrity judges, that’s cool too! i think so far we have Arto Lindsay (awesome!), Peaches (bitchin!) and an editor from adbusters. i guess i’m trying to breathe some joy back into it – gotta have the joy… plus i know that animated works will definately get attention – it’s pretty easy to just take yer digvid camera out and shoot something real quick, but the sweat that goes into animation, no matter what type, is much hefty and special. aiiii!!!!!

excuse me, but this reeks of cheap labour. The prize money is laughable. A music video is a lot of work. The prize money should be at least $2000. This is a way of getting some quality work done by a large group of animators, its the law of averages, at least 3 or 4 out of 40 are gonna be high quality. Whose Peaches?
