Whatever happened to…Mark Whiting?

Mark Whiting Iron Giant

There is a small gallery still up of work by THE IRON GIANT’s production designer Mark Whiting. Who? Truly one of the most passionate artists on that production, Mark seemingly vanished soon afterwards. Or did he? If you check out Mark on IMDB you see that he was the art director for the short-lived DUCK DODGERS TV series. and he also worked on some conceptual environmental designs for FINDING NEMO. (You can find a couple of his pieces in the “Art of…” book, if you’re curious.) It looks like he’s started his own production company, Tranquility Pictures, but the site looks to be a couple of years old.

To see some of his character designs for the Giant, go HERE and then click on the “next” button. His work is so rich and moody, I’d long to see more of it. If anybody knows what he’s up to lately, I’d be curious to know.

Iron Giant is one of the greatest films out there. I love it when cartoon network decides to play it over and over for an entire weekend. I’d love to see more feature films from this guy.

Dave H — if you want more Iron Giant-like films, I hope you’ve seen the Incredibles by now, from the same creator/director as the Iron Giant, Brad Bird.

Iron Giant always makes me a little ‘veclempt’ every time I watch it. Duck Dodgers isn’t that short lived either. It just got picked up for a second season.

I LOVED the Iron Giant. I even lucked out and happened to intern on the WB Burbank lot back then and got one of the movie theater posters of it. (gee, i hope i still have it) And it makes me totally verklempt, too. (sorry for the correction, ben. it’s the german in me that makes me do it.

I am sad to see that he hasn’t been picked up for more movies than what you’ve listed…how is that possible? Is this normal for hollywood to just let great talent slip away? (actually, I know the answer to that…they did completely screw up and not discover me, after all! ….ah, sarcasm.)

This site is rockin’ – keep up the good work!

WOW! I’ve never seen concept art have so much feeling and placement! His ability to work with colors and lines is amazing. I think I need to go find this guy and force my friendship on him.

    P.S. I love your blog.

Mark is happily toiling away on own projects.
I hear he may be found somewhere near a grassy knoll.

  • Oui-oui

My beloved is developing a live action feature with the producer of Silence of the Lambs. Last I heard he was writing the screenplay and is slated to direct. I think he’s in Austin Texas right now. By the way if you’ve never seen his short film Apple Jack you have GOT to check it out. Hi Mark!
