What the Puck ?

peterpuckEver since a Canadian became the new lead singer for IN*XS, I’ve been feeling kinda nostalgically patriotic. Like, remember Peter Puck? Back when I wasn’t interested in girls yet, Hanna-Barbera produced some animated shorts for NBC and Hockey Night In Canada featuring a tough-talking puck that explained to kids the rules of the game. I want to start a movement to bring Peter Puck back… I need a cartoon to explain the new NHL regulations to me.

in the mid ninties i was senior animator at the animation house here in toronto, and one day, while getting a cuppa, i noticed a man waiting in the reception area, that could only be brian mcfarlane, from the old hockey night in canada days!

i was introduced to him, { a thrill i might add } and learned that he was trying to get the peter puck series off the ground again. apparently, if memory serves, he owns the rights. all the hockey fans in the studio were abuzz to say the least.

alas, i don’t think anything ever came of it.

    I posted a question on AskMeFi about the Peter Puck cartoons a while ago, but got no definite leads. I’d love to join a movement to get the PP cartoons on dvd; I’ve always dug the great character designs for the refs, players, and commentators that the Hanna Barbera folks did for these shorts.

    By the way, I highly recommend the book “Peter Puck: Love That Hockey Game”, a publication released around the same time as the colouring book pictured. It’s full of great art, stills, and a summary of the fine game of hockey. Love it.

    Bring back Peter Puck. I am sure that more kids boys and girls would watch to understand the game better. I loved him when I was a little girl. I never knew why they took him out in the first place.

    Bring back Peter Puck…our kids need his funny wit to help teach the game of hockey! I loved Peter as a kid…my brother was always the red team and I pretended to be the blue team! Please let me know if anyone has information on where I might find the 9 three minute episodes from 1973!

    I was thinking about Peter Puck tonight, not sure why though. I remember him from HNIC when I was a kid. I would also like to see him brought back, or put on a dvd or something.

    Exactly my thoughts, Peter Puck was the spirit of youth hockey when I was a kid, now as a parent of a little superstar I couldn’t agree more for the return of Peter Puck, I think he not only embodies the essence of the game but he was also a true educator for children to associate easily with. Bring him back I say, and bring back the true spirit and the love of the game the way we saw it when we were kids…..

    We were just talking about Peter Puck the other day. I would love to see him back on HNIC or even on DVD.Growing up in the 70′s early 80′s it was always great to watch him on Saturday nights. I still have the pillow case of PP from my youth.
