Where Are the Ducks When You Need Them? is a show of new artwork by eccentric singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston who was the subject of the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston.
From the press release:
The year 2006 saw Johnston’s artwork included in the Whitney Biennial of Contemporary Art, as well as gallery shows in London and New York. In his drawings and paintings, Johnston explores themes of the Everyman,! unrequited love, the prevalence of evil in the world, redemption, Christianity, comics and myth. His cast of recurring characters includes Joe the Boxer/Everyman, a many-eyed demon, cat-people, Captain America, the Devil, a frog named Jeremiah the Innocent, and his muse “Laurie.”
You can see more of Daniel’s drawings over at Stress Records. His artwork seems to be a lot like his music: childlike, naive, barely tolerable at times, but blessed with the briefest flashes of genius. Okay, if not “genius”, then at least “ridiculously awesome”?
The show’s opening reception is Friday, February 16, 2007 at Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer, Houston, TX. It runs through Friday, April 13.
