Where the Wild Things Are: 1983 CG test

I’ve heard about this test for ages and now through the wonder of YouTube I can finally see it: the “Where the Wild Things Are” CG test from 1983. It featured John Lasseter’s (and Glen Keane’s) hand animated characters on 3D computer backgrounds done by MAGI Synthevision. Disney dropped the project, but both Lasseter and LucasFilm saw the potential of this new medium. John was hired by LucasFilm (later named Pixar) soon afterwards and, well…you know the rest.

Actually, there are several CGI tests before this one done by MAGI, but they weren’t for Disney.

This is interesting to see, and though I appreciate John Lassiter’s work, I’m not crazy about these character designs for Wild Things. I’m glad they didnt go this route.

It’s a really interesting curiousity, but I’m really glad this never happened, not only would it have sullied (arguably) the best childrens book ever, but it’s existance would probably have made the impending Spike Jonze version a lot less likely to happen.
