Windows, Masks & Doors

Windows, Masks & Doors is an animated short by Sarah Orenstein. It was her senior thesis project at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2006, and has already played several festivals. It’s a marvellously fun piece to watch, and she has this to say:

Windows, masks, and doors first appealed to me in their uses of intentionally concealing and revealing. This seemed like a marvelous way to expose space and characters. Both visual and aural motifs are utilized to create an old radio music box and its conductor who tunes a medley of tracks revealing masked players hidden.

I was expecting a Bill Gates, Jim Carrey, and Jim Morrison tie-in. (bad joke) I find this animation in the same level as the Lotte Reiniger animated silhouette classic film in 1926, The Adventures of Prince Achmed. Well done indeed. It has such an NFB feel to it.
