ZBrush and Rick Baker

If I were to learn a 3D modelling application, it would probably be Pixologic’s ZBrush because it markets itself as a sculpting program — shapes are carved, pushed, pulled, stretched, moulded, as if working with clay instead of numbers and math and polygons. It’s like the Painter of the 3D world.

ArtDorks posted a link to an impressive gallery of ZBrush creations the other day, one of which was this great 3D model of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s Monster by Rick Baker… yes, that Rick Baker, the Hollywood makeup effects wizard.

ZBrush has a number of artist interviews on the site, including Rick Baker (and the previously-blogged Hiroshi Yoshii).

Yeah theres been some really stellar work coming from ZBrush. It makes me wish Id stuck with 3D modeling until the program was released :P

I wonder what Baker used as source material. Because he probably does have a life mask of Karloff at some age. Or he could have started with a photo from some point in Karloffs career when he had given up the monster, I think there is an older Karloff under the mask. It is an odd blend of modern detail and classic design.

I also wonder if he has used the process for prototyping prosthetics. Seems he has always historically started conceptualizing a job in 2d, almost to the degree Harryhausen would.
