When I was in Grade 1 my mom brought home a box of old comic books given to her by a coworker cleaning out her teenage son’s room. This seemingly inconsequential event sealed my fate. I became obsessed with copying the drawings in those old comics (and on the newspaper comics page). One day, I determined, I would become a comic artist! Got sideswiped by the ad industry… learned how to do storyboards… dabbled in finished cartoon illustration for packaging design, books and textbooks… did (and still do) some editorial… never settled down into one field or one style. Everything looks so good and so interesting – so challenging – I want to dabble in it all! I guess I’m a “restless illustrator” or a “jack-of-all-trades”…
Or an art mercenary. Take your pick.
All I know is I still feel bad for that teenage kid who lost his box of old comics.
I run a blog called Today’s Inspiration about the art and artists of the mid-20th century.
I also run another blog about storyboards and comps called Storyboard Central.
I’m co-admin of the Flickr group Mid-Century Illustrated.
