Director Valerie Barnhart animates the 1999 disappearance of 7-year-old Xiana Fairchild, as told in a spoken word performance by Jamie DeWolf.
Xiana's story is just one of thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in the U.S. and Canada. In 2015, 25% of all female homicide victims in Canada were Indigenous, while Indigenous women make up only 4% of the female population. The recent police killings of Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi in New Brunswick have further underscored the RCMP's systemic racism and indifference to Indigenous lives.
This week Drawn is featuring BIPOC creators and stories in support of Black Lives Matter and the protests around the world to end systemic racism, particularly in policing. Join me in donating to both the Black Legal Action Centre and the Native Women's Association of Canada.
