In Shen Jie's Horse, we see brief glimpses of strange violence that eventually coalesce into a greater whole, though their meaning never seems to be in reach. What is this conflict between man and horse? Or man and man?
In this interview, Shen Jie explains that she wanted to make a film about time. The numbered frames of the running horse, and the staccato editing seem to be direct references to Edweard Muybridge, whose pioneering work in photographing motion famously captured proof that all four legs of a horse leave the ground when running, and underscored the discrepancies between reality and what we can perceive with our eyes.
