2013, Ayaho Kawakami

In I'm Nothing, Ayaho Kawakami uses minimal drawings to depict a young woman retreating inwards when faced with the daunting task of facing the day and the bustling world around her. At the moment the world looks a little different—we're not crowding the streets on the way to work in the morning, and classrooms are all virtual—but none of that certainly stops me these days from feeling like this character does. Or maybe I just miss the beach. Animal Crossing has helped.
