Jeu

2006, Georges Schwizgebel

While yesterday's short also featured morphing imagery, and even an explicit shout-out to M.C. Escher, Georges Schwizgebel's Jeu takes things to another level.

The title itself, French for "game", suggests a certain playfulness at the outset, but simple morphing shapes take on a frantic urgency as the music speeds up, and the images become a chaotic kaleidoscope of impossibly interlocking scenes.

I first saw Jeu when it screened at the Ottawa Animation Festival in 2006. I was there covering the festival for the original Drawn, so it seems fitting to include the short in this first week's lineup.
