1964, Jan Lenica

Based on the 1959 play by Eugene Ionesco, Jan Lenica's adaptation of Rhinoceros follows a hapless everyman who who begins to notice that people around him are turning into rhinoceroses. His increasing paranoia of losing his humanity finds him struggling with his own transformation from man to rhino. The original play was a response to rising fascism in the world, with the rhinos representing the herd mentality of a complacent population. It's disheartening that this short has such renewed relevance in 2020.
