1995, Helen Hill

Helen Hill's Scratch and Crow, filmed in 16mm, was added to the National Film Registry in 2009. The film "reveals the secret life cycle of chickens, from their hatching by mother cats to their noisy ascent into Heaven."

I can't embed the film here, but please click through to Vimeo to watch.

The cut-out collage-style animation is interspersed with typed title cards. I think of this one often; it's a little hopeful, and maybe a little sad, too… but what a glorious image:

If I knew,
I would assure you we are all
Finally good chickens
And will rise together,
A noisy flock of round,
Dusty angels.
