1966, Gene Deitch

With his producer unable to secure the funds for a full-length feature version of The Hobbit, and desperate to not the let the rights expire without producing a film, Gene Deitch created this less-than-faithful version in 30 days. And while this is probably blasphemy to Tolkien purists, this is my favourite filmed version of the story. It's maybe even blasphemy to animation purists, since this is barely even animated. But it's far less dreary than Peter Jackson's version (and about 8 hours shorter), and the art is more pleasing to look at than the Rankin & Bass 1977 version.
