The Sand Castle
1977, Co Hoedeman

It's been just over a month since relaunching this site with Richard Condie's The Big Snit, and it feels fitting to visit another childhood favourite: Co Hoedeman's The Sand Castle, which would've been on the same worn-out VHS collection of NFB shorts that I rewatched constantly.
Just as Co Hoedeman brought wooden blocks to life in Tchou-tchou, here he turns to another childhood plaything: the sand castle. Stop motion animation seems to be the ideal medium for telling stories about breathing life into inanimate objects—or, in this case, inanimate objects breathing life into other inanimate objects. It fills me with such nostalgia to watch it.
The Sand Castle won Best Animated Short Film at the 50th Academy Awards.
