I just discovered the work of Paul Thurlby (via a post at Delicious Industries). I love the rough vintage look, and I especially like his growing Alphabet set on Flickr.
When we last wrote about ABC3D, the highly imaginative pop-up alphabet book by Marion Bataille, the book was merely a hand-produced mockup.
The book is now shipping, and I’m holding one in my hands now. It’s a marvel of creativity and ingenuity. I want to get one for every designer on my Christmas list.
Cartoonist Garen Ewing has started a daily drawing project: drawing comic book characters in alphabetical order, as suggested by members of the Garen’s A-Z of Comic Strip Characters Facebook group.
Ewing’s work is clearly influenced by Hergé, so this C for Captain Hadoock seemed particularly apt for posting.
This cute and impressive film of Gradus and Job Wouters drawing the alphabet is spotlighted on youtube today. Watch and smile.
ABC3D is an innovative and exciting new alphabet pop-up book by French designer, Marion Bataille.
From Roaring Brook Press:
MARION BATAILLE is graphic and book designer who has never before been published in this country. She lives in Paris. This is just a hand-made mock-up of the actual book which publishes in Oct. 2008.
UPDATE: The book is now shipping from Amazon

Learning the alphabet is part of every young child’s development, but how many of them learn calligraphy? In an Internet overflowing with videos of kids doing adorable things, this is my new favourite.
(Thanks, DH!)

Check out this brilliant typographic experiment from Jeremy Pettis. Twenty-Six Types of Animals (scroll right) renders the names of animals from A-Z in custom typography to match the personality, appearance, and essence of each creature.

Twenty artists of the Robotface Collective have assembled, for the children of the world, a list of 26 creatures, both real and imaginary, to assist with their memorization and understanding of the modern English alphabet. The book, viewable online, is called A to Zee.
Some of the creatures seem a bit frightening for kids (I’m looking at you, Fenriri) but it’s a nice cross-section of illustration styles at least!
Thanks, Stefan!
The name Michael Fleming is used a lot ’round these parts, and for good reason: he’s awesome. Why, just check out this project he started in May, Star Wars ABC.
Shown here: E is for Evazan. He has the death sentence on twelve systems–of my heart!
(Sorry— I don’t even know what that means.)

Michel Gagné has put the entire contents of his now out-of-print alphabet book of twisted creatures, Frenzied Fauna: From A to Z, online for all to enjoy. (via the Flight blog)
