Congratulations to our John Martz, for getting nominated March 12 for “Best Emerging Talent” in the annual Doug Wright Awards! His short “It’s Snowing Outside, We Should Go For A Walk” is the reason. Got a link to it, John?
Edit: Here’s the link — It’s Snowing Outside. We Should Go For a Walk.
Le banc (The Bench) is a beautiful trippy little film from French illustrator Bruno Salamone and Belgian children’s book author Kitty Crowther. The short screened at Aller-retour, an exhibition in Paris.
I’ve already watched it twice. So fun.
Oh man, I love me some Grickle. I would be probably be happy if YouTube was nothing but Graham Annable’s surreal animations. Here’s his latest, Channels.
I am also looking forward to snagging a copy of Graham’s upcoming Book of Grickle, a compilation of his comics work, which is just as twisted and perfectly paced as his animation.
Yes! Joe Murray, the creator of Rocko’s Modern Life and Camp Lazo, has completed a new short/pilot called Frog in a Suit.

Unfortunately there’s no embeddable video for this short, but do check it out at its own site. Antoine Arditii’s Yulia is an entertaining black-and-white short about a woman who finds herself looking for love in a stark, empty room. The rotoscoped animation was created by printing out 3D animation onto paper, and tracing it with pencil.
Feeling like a little hand-drawn Argentinian psychedelia? Enjoy The Head by Matias Vigliano and Dante Zaballa.
So you may have already heard that there’s going to be a Higglety Pigglety Pop! short film as a bonus feature on the Where the Wild Things Are Blu-Ray, which is coming out March 2. Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life is of course the other major chidren’s book by Maurice Sendak. It’s a surreal story about a dog looking for Experience.
The film is semi-animated (there are puppets involved) by the filmmakers of Madame Tutli-Putli and includes the voice-acting of Meryl Streep (Jennie), Forest Whitaker (Lion), Spike Jonze (Plant). The production design – as in Tutli Putli - is rich and stunning. Streep is perfect as usual.
Two more clips after the jump…
A short walk in the forest with Montreal comic book artist and animator, Diane Obomsawin. Obomsawin is also author of the wonderful, Kaspar, by Drawn & Quarterly.
Also, if you’re not already convinced – Diane Obomsawin wins.
There’s something familiar about the actors in this animated video by Rhett Dashwood, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
