The City of Vancouver – home to the Olympic Winter Games as of right now – is only a little over 100 years old. It never had a lot in the way of local printing and publishing, but some of the local businesses’ ads that ran in local directories have been posted by the City Archives. It’s a treat to see the old fonts, and the selection of businesses really tells us something about the state of the city a century ago: meat globules, fish, coal, tents, and “disappearing furniture”!

LetterCult offers up an exhaustive 15-page post detailing the best custom lettering of 2009. It’s the first part in a series of posts that will narrow down the list to a top ten, an interview with their person of the year, and finally, something they’re calling AlphaBattle, which looks interesting.

Designer Ty Mattson of Mattson Creative can’t wait either. In fact, while designing an invite to the premiere at his home, he came up with several cool retro-style poster designs. I’d love to see some of these available as actual printed posters.

Loving these fake screengrabs of fake movie titles from illustrator Matthew Lyons. I wish they were all real movies.
