Lesley-Anne Green

I love these creepy-yet-somehow-adorable ceramic dolls from Toronto artist Lesley-Anne Green. Lesley is married to cartoonist Jeff Lemire, and there’s a definite cross-pollination of styles going on here, which is always interesting to see.

Not all of her work is this grotesque, but some days I’ll take creepy over cute.

Marina Bychkova

marinaNext on my agenda: Dolls with nipples! Don’t worry, they’re not all naked, but 23-year-old doll-maker Marina Bychkova originally hails from Siberia, a land where I’m pretty sure everyone is always naked and totally not uptight about it! Hurray!

I found this interview with Marina at Pixelsurgeon.com, then went over to her site to see more of her amazingly detailed porcelain and polymer clay dolls (her site behaves oddly in Safari: you have to click and hold down on the thumbnails to keep the full size image visible; it works better in Firefox). And more coolness: She lives right here in Vancouver! It even turns out that she was showing her work at the Community Center down the street from me just three years ago, and I TOTALLY MISSED IT. I would have loved to see her work up close.
