One of the greats, Ronald Searle, turns 90 today. Searle’s unmistakable and influential pen line has decorated countless books and magazines. At 90 years old, the drawings still flow from his hand in his studio in the south of France. Here’s a new interview conducted to celebrate the milestone:

Your take-home quote from the interview: “The moment it is successfull, kill it.”

Oh how I wish I could visit the exhibit of Searle’s work that opens today at The Cartoon Museum in London. And even then, Searle’s complete archive of sketchbooks, drawings, and his personal library, will find a home in the Wilhelm-Busch Museum in Hanover, Germany.

For more, you can’t go wrong with the brilliant and image-rich blog, the Ronald Searle Tribute Blog, and our own posts tagged Ronald Searle here on Drawn!.

Richard Thompson, whose own work shows the undeniable influence of Searle’s, has some nice things to say on the occasion, and shares a link to another recent interview.

Now that Terrible Yellow Eyes is (mostly) behind us, many artists are beginning to wonder ‘where the wild things are’. Well friends, take heart… there are Monsters in Real Places!

A group of talented young Canadian illustrators has recently started a blog where you can meet wild things like Inviso Bill (above) and Huge Green Guy AKA, “Hugh” (below).

The best part? You are invited to contribute the monsters you have witnessed in real places to Monsters in Real Places: “Care to join in the fun?” write the blog’s creators, “Use a photograph of some setting. Create and add a monster into the photo. E-mail it to us with a quick blurb and some contact info. It’s that simple.”

It’s tricky to pull an image from this all-Flash site, but the animations were too hilarious not to try. They seem to be a seamless mix of tiny puppets with digital animation of some kind, and they have the oddest sense of humor. Add in their bright candy-colors and strange hybrid creatures (the above characters are Francie, with “an apple for a head and a fish-finger body”, and Bertie with “a frog’s head and a fish-finger body”) and I’m wasting a good hour watching everything on the site. You have been warned.

Bonus: the name “Swatpaz” seems to be a truncated spoonerism of “Patrick Swayze.” (I think.)

Since we last linked to him, illustrator Tim Gough has updated his site with plenty of new work. I’m a fan of his candy-coloured palette and use of textures.
