The latest book from Craig Yoe (who brought us the similarly naughty Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings) delves into the erotic artwork of Joe Shuster created when the artist was down on his luck trying to reclaim the copyright for Superman. Yoe sez:
A while back, I found a cheaply printed, vintage porno booklet in a dusty cardboard box at a rare book sale, and exclaimed to myself , “Oh, my God, Joe Shuster!” And that was just the beginning of surprises. I sold the idea to Charlie Kochman at Abrams of doing a book about the art of this incredibly rare series. I eventually tracked down the complete run at much effort and cost—16 books and more! After I got my contract, I found out a WHOLE lot more—the gripping behind-the-scenes story connected with mobsters, showgirls, the anti-comics crusader Dr. Fredric Wertham, neo-Nazi Jewish juvenile delinquents, Senate investigations, Supreme Court banning, cops on the take, flogging of young teenage girls and…MURDERS!
This link speaks for itself. Justine Lai’s series of oil paintings depicts herself in flagrante delicto with each US president (painting them in order, her conquests end at Ulysses S. Grant so far). Needless to say, not safe for work.
Craig Yoe’s Arf series of books is like getting a little treasure chest of cartoon goodies with each volume. Book 3 in the series is Arf Forum. Like its predecessors, it’s filled with all sorts of rarely-seen comic and cartoon illustration. A particular treat is the book’s opening section devoted to vintage images of people reading comics — celebrities, magazine cover illustrations, and comic characters themselves. Plus: 19th century engravings, horror comic book covers, pre-Flintstone caveman funnies, and more. These books are fun, and the Arf Lovers Blog tells me Book 4, Comic Arf is already nearing release.
Also fun is Craig’s collection of Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings. The cover actually makes the contents of the book seem more torrid than they actually are. Inside you’ll find all kinds of naughty (but rarely lewd) drawings by cartoonists not known for being particularly titillating: Syd Hoff, Al Jaffee, Ernie Bushmiller, Johnny Hart, Walt Kelly, Carl Barks, Chuck Jones, and plenty more. There are even nude self-portraits (seriously!) by Will Eisner and Charles Schulz. HAWT.

Fans of Gorillaz and Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett, looking to get a little, uh, closer to to artist’s work may be interested in the Ultimate Members, a series of Hewlitt-designed vibrators.
To help celebrate Mother’s Day, Craig Yoe put on a supreme battle of cartoon moms: America’s Top Toon-a-MILF. It was a week-long look at some of the cartoon world’s most famous mothers. Of course, a blog reality show wouldn’t be a blog reality show without, ahem, blog celebrity judges, so Craig called on Cartoon Brew’s Jerry Beck, The Beat’s Heidi MacDonald, and yours truly. So who’s your favourite cartoon mom?
If you liked some of the charmingly filthy drawings by John Cuneo when we first posted a link to his work, you’re going to want to get your hands on a copy of his latest book: nEuROTIC.
A collection of previously unpublished drawings culled from John’s sketchbooks, nEuROTIC showcases some of the most bizarrely erotic and hilariously perverse drawings you’ll ever see — in shocking full colour. Collectors of Robert Crumb’s published sketchbooks will find that Cuneo’s drawings rival Crumb’s not only in sexual deviancy, but in draftsmanship and humour as well. The book is an absolute joy to page through, and was no doubt a joy to create.
Edward Sorel puts it best:
Until I saw John Cuneo’s drawings, I had no idea just how artistically rewarding it could be to have your mind in the gutter.”
Check out the personal section of John’s site for a (not safe-for-work) sampling of what you can expect to find in nEuROTIC.
Illustrator/cartoonist Jess Fink, despite what her name might imply, is no fink at all. In fact, she is quite the opposite, and an exciting cartooning talent. In addition to her portfolio of illustrations, Jess proves herself to be quite the, ahem, cunning linguist with her new naughty comic, Jess Fink’s Dirty Limericks, at AdultWebcomics.com (quite the opposite of her cute, friendly Threadless shirts) Follow along with her adventures on her blog!
Gorgeous ink and watercolour illustrations and drawings by John Cuneo. Beautiful stuff. I love anyone whose final work has the spontaneity and looseness of a rough sketchbook. The dude can draw. (The section of his site with personal work may be a bit not-safe-for-work, so be warned.)
