The end of the year is never the end of the year without JibJab’s musical take on things. This time around, their signature cut-out style is achieved by—of all things—cut-out paper. Watch Never a Year Like ‘09.

I visited Evan at JibJab earlier in the year and he told me how he really wanted to bring more stop motion and hand-made touches to the work they do, and he wasn’t kidding.

One of the things I love about JibJab’s videos of late is the extensive behind-the-scenes looks at pretty much every aspect of producing their shorts. The Making of Never a Year Like ‘09 is chock full of animatics, production art, and more goodies for every single scene in the piece—a goldmine of inspiration for anyone interested in creating low-fi, hand-made animation.

See also: JibJab’s 2008 and 2007 in review.

I cannot even begin to fathom how long this took. Created for the New Zealand Book Council by Andersen M Studio, this animated spot really does seem, literally and figuratively, to capture the act of using the imagination to turn the printed page into imagery.

It makes a fine companion piece to Scottish animator Eleanor Stewart’s Howdown from Rodeo, which also turns a book’s pages (here, a musical score) into cut-out stop motion.

It also reminds me of the delicate paper-folding art of Peter Callesen.

Drawn!: Tell me a little about your involvement in the production of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Christian DeVita: I was the lead storyboard artist on the movie. I was drafted in early in the production (Sep 2007) along with other 6 artists.

We went through a few passes of the scenes, based on some thumbnails that Wes drew, before he decided he wanted to work closely with one of us in Paris. The animation studio and sets were in East London’s Three Mills studios.

I don’t read Dutch, but I can tell that Sjors Vervoort is a newly graduated animator from the Netherlands. Beyond that, I’ll need a good translator for his website, but not for this great stop-motion/hand-painted hybrid animation, made with painted bits of cardboard inserted in the streets of (I assume) the Netherlands.
(Thanks, Julia!)
